Plaster Takeoff and Bag Count Estimator

A business that sells to plastering contractors

A calculator that tells a plasterer exactly how many bags of lime, gypsum or veneer plaster to order for a job.

I under-ordered lime by fourteen bags and lost a day waiting on the supplier.

The idea

A spreadsheet and web calculator that takes wall and ceiling areas, coat count, thickness and waste factor and returns bag counts, pigment weights and lath and washer quantities for specific supplier products, with coverage figures maintained from manufacturer data sheets. Produces a material order list and a client-ready quote line. Sold as a one-time purchase with an optional yearly data update.

The customer

A plastering contractor coats interior walls and exterior facades with lime, gypsum, veneer or stucco finishes, and some specialize in restoring ornate cornices in old buildings or applying polished Venetian finishes. Most are small crews of one to five tradespeople run by the owner, who bids jobs, mixes material and works on site.

Also called veneer plaster contractor, venetian plaster applicator, historic plaster restoration, stucco & EIFS contractor. Here is what a plastering contractor spends on and what goes wrong for them, which is where this idea came from.

What they spend on

  • Sample board and specification approval workflow
  • Paddle mixers, mortar mixers and plaster pumps
  • Hawk, trowel and stainless finishing tool replacement
  • Lime, gypsum and veneer plaster suppliers
  • Pigment, marble dust and aggregate suppliers
  • Blue board, metal lath and plaster washer suppliers
  • Ornamental mould and cornice casting service
  • Scaffolding and plank rental
  • Stucco and plaster pumps with texture spray guns
  • Continuous mixers and mortar hog maintenance

What goes wrong for them

  • Color and sheen consistency across large wall runs
  • Short working time before plaster sets in warm conditions
  • Cracking over substrate movement and old lath
  • Scarcity of tradespeople trained in traditional plaster
  • Matching historic profiles and existing patina
  • Moisture intrusion claims and EIFS litigation exposure
